Kompute — Documentation

Overview

Kompute is a cross-platform music production calculator with 10 precision tools for studio math. Tempo-synced delay times, note-to-frequency conversion with 100+ temperaments, timecode arithmetic, sample length conversion, and more.

Available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.


How to Use

Editing Values

Every numeric value in Kompute can be edited in multiple ways depending on your device:

Desktop (Windows / macOS):

  • Drag up or down on any value to adjust it
  • Mouse wheel or trackpad scroll to fine-tune
  • Click a value to select it, then type a new number
  • Point at digits after the decimal to modify just the fractional part

Mobile (iOS / Android):

  • Swipe up or down on any value to adjust it
  • Tap a value to enter it via the keyboard

Copying Values

Tap or click any calculated value to copy it to your clipboard. Works on every platform.

Navigation

Use the tab bar at the bottom to switch between the 10 modules. The top row has 5 icons (TAP, DELAY, NOTE->HZ, HZ->NOTE, SAMPLES), the bottom row has 5 more (TEMPO, TC, REVERB, COMP, EQ).

Cross-Module Data Flow

When you detect a tempo via Tap Tempo, that BPM automatically transfers to the Delay Table, Reverb Pre-Delay, and Compressor Sync modules.


Modules

1. Tap Tempo + Metronome

Tap the pad to detect BPM. The algorithm handles imprecise or missed taps, discarding outliers to give you a stable reading with 2 decimal places of precision.

Controls:

  • Tempo display with decimal precision (e.g., 120.00 BPM)
  • Tap pad for beat detection (tap the pad or press any key on desktop)
  • Round button snaps to the nearest whole BPM
  • Start Metronome plays a click at the detected tempo
  • Reset clears everything

You can also type a tempo directly into the display field.


2. Delay Time Table

Enter a BPM and see tempo-synced delay times for 21 note divisions. Each division shows normal, dotted, and triplet values in both milliseconds and Hz.

Use case: Set delay times, LFO rates, chorus depth, phaser speed, or any tempo-synced parameter in your DAW.

Math: Quarter note ms = 60000 / BPM. Dotted = normal x 1.5. Triplet = normal x 2/3. Hz = 1000 / ms.


3. Note to Frequency

Convert any musical note to its frequency in Hz. Supports 100+ temperaments beyond standard 12-TET equal temperament.

Controls:

  • Temperament selector with 100+ options (Equal, Pythagorean, meantone, well temperaments, and more)
  • Diapason (concert pitch, default A = 440 Hz, adjustable)
  • Root note selector (the diapason note does not have to be A)
  • Reset to A440 quick button
  • Scrollable note list showing every note with frequency, cents deviation, and MIDI number
  • Audio preview button per note

Columns displayed:

  • Note name (e.g., C4)
  • Frequency in Hz
  • Cents deviation from equal temperament
  • MIDI note number (0-127)

Math (equal temperament): f(n) = 440 x 2^((n-69)/12) where n is the MIDI note number. Other temperaments use specific interval ratios.


4. Frequency to Note

Enter any frequency and find the nearest musical note with cents deviation.

Controls:

  • Frequency input (editable)
  • Note display showing the closest note (large text)
  • Cents deviation in both 100-cent and 50-cent notation
  • Listen button plays a sine wave at the entered frequency

Use case: Identify the pitch of a drum hit, resonance, or oscillator tone. Find out exactly how far off-pitch a sound is.

Math: MIDI note = 69 + 12 x log2(freq / 440). Closest note = round(MIDI note). Cents deviation = (MIDI note - closest) x 100.


5. Sample Length Converter

Bidirectional conversion between samples, milliseconds, seconds, bars, and beats.

Controls:

  • Sample rate (editable, default 44100 Hz)
  • Number of beats (needed for tempo calculation)
  • Length in samples (editable)
  • Length in milliseconds (editable)
  • Tempo (editable)

Edit any field and all others recalculate automatically.

Math: ms = (samples / sampleRate) x 1000. tempo = (beats / ms) x 60000.


6. Tempo Change Calculator

Calculate the time-stretch ratio and transposition when changing from one tempo to another.

Controls:

  • Original tempo (editable)
  • New tempo (editable)
  • Swap button to flip original and new
  • Time stretching %
  • % tempo variation (delta)
  • Transpose in semitones and cents (both 100-cent and 50-cent notation)

Edit any field and all others recalculate.

Use case: "I have a sample at 120 BPM and need it at 140. What stretch percentage? What pitch shift in semitones?"

Math: stretch% = (original / new) x 100. semitones = 12 x log2(new / original).


7. Timecode Calculator

Full timecode arithmetic for video/film post-production.

Supports 10 FPS formats: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.94, 29.97, 29.97 drop frame, 30, 48, 50, 59.94, 60 fps.

Operations: Add, subtract, and multiply timecodes. Displays both the timecode (HH:MM:SS:FF) and the frame count simultaneously. Changing the FPS format auto-converts the current timecode.

Use case: Calculate total runtime, find offsets between cue points, convert between frame rates for delivery.


8. Reverb Pre-Delay

Calculate tempo-synced pre-delay values for reverb. Enter your BPM and choose a note division to get the pre-delay time in milliseconds.

Offers small, medium, large, and hall presets, plus custom values. Keeps your reverb tails rhythmically aligned with the track.


9. Compressor Sync

Calculate tempo-synced attack and release times for compressors. Same note divisions as the delay table, optimized for typical compressor ranges.

Enter your BPM and see attack/release values that lock your dynamics processing to the groove.
