STRANGE — Documentation

Overview

STRANGE replaces the static waveshaper with living mathematics. Feed your signal into Lorenz and Logistic chaos systems — attractors that never repeat — and get distortion that breathes, shifts, and evolves.

Drive the chaos harder and it warps deeper. Pull back and it colors. The curve is never the same twice.


Drive

ControlDescription
DriveHow deep your signal enters the chaos system. From subtle coloring to full saturation. Low drive adds warmth and harmonics; high drive pushes the signal hard into the attractor, creating dense, aggressive distortion.

Chaos

ControlDescription
ChaosAdjusts the density and intensity of the chaotic attractor (1Hz to 200Hz). At low speeds, the distortion character drifts slowly and smoothly. At high speeds, the attractor oscillates rapidly, creating wild, unpredictable waveshaping that changes faster than the ear can track.

Feedback

ControlDescription
FeedbackRoutes the output back into the chaos system. Adds resonance and self-oscillating character. Low feedback thickens the tone. High feedback can push the system into chaotic self-oscillation — the attractor feeds on its own output.

Modes

Four distortion characters that reshape how the chaos attractor interacts with your signal:

ModeDescription
FoldWavefolding — when the signal exceeds the threshold, it folds back on itself instead of clipping. Creates dense, bell-like harmonics that shift with the chaos.
ShatterQuantized scatter — breaks the signal into discrete steps that scatter across the waveform. Glitchy, granular destruction.
WarpDomain warp — stretches and compresses the time domain of the signal. Creates pitch-shifting, flanger-like artifacts driven by the attractor.
GlitchBlock displacement — displaces chunks of the signal in time. Creates stutters, gaps, and rearranged fragments.

Tone

ControlDescription
TonePost-distortion tonal shaping. Sculpts the frequency content after the chaos processing. Roll it back to tame harsh high frequencies, or open it up to let all the chaos harmonics through.

Mix & Output

ControlDescription
MixDry/wet blend. Full wet for pure chaos, blended back for parallel processing. At 50% you get the original signal combined with the chaos-processed version.
OutputFinal output level. Compensate for the gain added by drive and feedback.

Signal Flow

Input → Drive → Chaos Attractor (Lorenz/Logistic) → Mode (Fold/Shatter/Warp/Glitch) → Feedback Loop → Tone → Mix → Output

Formats

  • AUv3 — runs inside AUM, GarageBand, ApeMatrix, Audiobus, or any AUv3 host. Multiple instances supported, each with independent settings.
  • Standalone — runs as its own iOS app with built-in audio routing.

Requires: iOS 16.0 or later. iPhone and iPad.
