FALSE MEMORY

FALSE MEMORY is a real-time audio disintegration effect. Feed it any sound and watch it decay. A tape left in the sun. A corrupted file half-recovered from a dead drive. A memory dissolving as you try to hold onto it.

Turn up MEMORY and the destruction begins. Everything else shapes how the sound falls apart.

Destruction Engine

The Analog / Digital slider crossfades two chains that both process your sound. Slide left for tape: Cassette, Reel-to-reel or VHS, with high-frequency loss, saturation and pitch wobble. Slide right for digital corruption: Lo-fi, Circuit-bent or Data-mosh, with sample-rate reduction, bitcrushing and frozen slices that replay.

Drift makes the pitch of the whole output wander at random. On the digital side it also adds timing jitter.

Damage adds tape dropouts, sudden dips in level. It scales with MEMORY.

Atmosphere

Fog blends in a frozen, smeared copy of the spectrum. Tonal keeps the harmonic structure. Inharmonic smears it into a metallic cloud. Evolving freezes it almost solid at high Memory and sweeps three bands across it.

Ghosts mixes in sound from the last three seconds. Echoes replay earlier audio about an octave up, and Imprints replay it as a low-passed smear. Granular scatters short grains from anywhere in that history.

Texture

• Hiss: tape noise, from subtle warmth to a roaring floor
• Crackle: random pops and surface damage

Both belong to the analog chain, so they fade out as you slide toward Digital.

Set It and Forget It

Evolve slowly pushes MEMORY, Damage, Fog and Ghosts up to full over 1, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 minutes. Set it and walk away. Come back to something completely different.

The Randomize button rerolls every control except Mix, Hiss, Crackle and Evolve, Memory included. Hit it until something clicks.

Formats

• iPhone and iPad: an AUv3 in AUM, GarageBand, Logic or any other AUv3 host, plus a standalone app. Needs iOS 14 or later.
• Mac and Windows: VST3 and CLAP, plus AU on Mac.
